Single Working Women Day 2025: 4th August is celebrated as the Single Working Women Day every year with the aim to recognise and appreciate the role played by single working women in communities. On this occasion, here are five Bollywood films that beautifully portray the complexities of single working women by bringing them center of the spotlight.

Piku

Piku boasts of a stellar cast of Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan, and Amitabh Bachchan. Piku is a film about a young architect who is handling her job and her widowed father single-handedly. As the film rolls out, one realises that this father-duo shares an unconventional and quirky relationship, but it is Piku, essayed by Padukone, who remains at the center of the film as the friend and enemy of her father. The film showcases the frustration and rage of a single working woman while exploring her desires and needs.

Pink

A poignant film to understand the challenges and horrors single working women are prone to, Pink is a stark reminder of how women are always pushed into the hierarchy, and if they do not play by the rules, society and sometimes even the judicial system fail them. Three working individuals, Minal, Andrea, and Falak, live together in Delhi as they manage their jobs.

Pink explores how single, working women often face judgment and scrutiny regarding their lifestyle choices.

PK

Anushka Sharma plays the role of Jaggu, a journalist and news anchor who helps PK, an alien, get back home. A dynamic young woman traversing the roads, monuments, and even lock up of New Delhi, Jaggu fights her father to make her own choices in life, especially the ones as stark as the person they loves and devotes their life to. Many single women have to go through this personal battle with their families to pursue a life and find a love they choose.

The Dirty Picture

Starring Vidya Balan, the film is inspired by the life of South Indian actress Silk Smitha, a renowned name in the industry at a time when men ruled it. The film is a raw portrayal of the single woman with no godfather in the entertainment industry, where the casting couch is the tip of the iceberg, amidst an array of hushed challenges.

Gangubai Kathiawadi

Based on the life of Gangubai Harjivandas, a young woman who was forced into prostitution in Kamathipura, the film stars Alia Bhatt in the titular role of a woman who rises from the ashes to become the ‘Mafia Queen’ and become a revolutionary figure fighting to make prostitution a legal status and decriminalise it.
