Winter Festivals 2024: India is a land rich in culture and its celebrations. Its many festivals are a testament to its love for heritage, art, and entertainment. As seasons change, the festivals also evolve with the phases of the moon. Winter is marked by festivals celebrating its onset and rituals celebrated in the months from November to March. Here is a list of five electrifying festivals upcoming this winter season. 

Hornbill Festival 

An annual festival of Nagaland celebrated from 1 December to 10 December is a display of their devotion to the sanctity of agriculture. Also known as the ‘Festival of Festivals’ Hornbill named after the sacred bird of the region witnesses each tribe of the land come together for a cultural celebration of heritage with colourful performances, crafts, sports, food fairs, games, and ceremonies

Rann Utsav 

On the pristine salt desert backdrop of Kutch, Rann Utsav is a vibrant festival of dance, music, and natural beauty. The mega festival on the marshland of salt was a way to attract tourists to the rich culture of Gujarat. Today it runs from November to December turning the place into ‘City of Tents’ with an array of activities planned to keep the visitors entertained. From camel safaris to dance frolic, Rann awaits you for an experience like no other. 

Jaislamer Desert Festival

The three days of the Jaisalmer Desert festival in February bring life and fervor to the desert as the locals of the golden city mingle with tourists from around the world as they experience the region's colour, music, and traditions. The highlights of the festival are its folk performances, puppet shows, camel race, juggling events, and more all culminating in a grand finale on a moonlight night at the Sam sand dunes.

Himachal Winter Carnival 

A haven for winter sports lovers, the Himachal Winter Festival is held annually in January when people from around the world flock to Manali for fun, frolic, and food. Featuring a diverse and unique lineup of activities from skiing, folk dancing, street plays, food festivals, band performances, and adventure sports. 

Thaipusam 

A reverential festival devoted to Lord Murugan celebrated in Tamil Nadu and Tamil communities, the festival is celebrated during the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai. Commemorating the victory of God Murugan over the demon Surapadman, the festival is marked by sacrificial acts of carrying Kavadi and piercing the body parts with kavadi as an act of penance as they walk long distances.
