Chopper Crash: Brigadier Lakhwinder Singh Lidder was amongst the victims that died in the helicopter crash on 8 December, Wednesday. An Army officer and the Brigadier's neighbor informed the media a day after the chopper crash that killed CDS Gen Bipin Rawat and 11 others, that Brigadier Lakhwinder Singh Lidder was all set to be promoted as Major General.
A second-generation Army officer, Brigadier Lidder belonged to Panchkula,(Haryana). He had been appointed on the staff of General Rawat for more than a year now. He was Defence Assistant to Gen Bipin Rawat. Brigadier Lidder had been cleared for promotion to the post of Major General and was about to leave General Rawat's staff soon to take up the charge as a division officer.
He was commissioned in the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, which he had earlier commanded as the second battalion of the regiment. Brigadier Lidder was a counterterrorism specialist and had served as India's defence attache to Kazakhstan. Also, he was a recipient of the Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.
Colonel Bhupinder Singh a close acquaintance who knew Brigadier Lidder for 20 years, stood outside House no 357 in Panchkula Sector 12, the Lidders' family home, and reminisced. He said, "he was a decorated officer, he was doing very well in his career. He had led a battalion in difficult areas, served on UN missions as well as embassies. This is a huge loss at a personal level too as we had been friends for 20 years,"
Colonel Singh said no one stays at the Lidders' Panchkula home now but that the Brigadier kept visiting there. He said "he last visited about a month-and-a-half back. We had a long chat. He was set to be promoted as Major General. It was to be announced any day. This is a big setback for the family and the nation."
BJP MP and former minister Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (retired) described Brigadier Lidder as one of India's "brightest and bravest officers." He was a very close friend of Brigadier and was deeply saddened by his demise. He paid condolences to his family and admired him as a true officer who had worked for the nation selflessly.
