Cannes 2025: Cannes Film Festival has officially banned nude and voluminous dresses on the red carpet in the newly amended laws revealed today. The decision comes in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and the Fresh law.

Cannes Says No To ‘Nudity’

The 78th edition of Festival De Cannes kickstarts from today (13th May) and hours before the unfurling of the red carpet, the festival released an official statement detailing that no nudity and voluminous dresses will be permitted on the red carpet.

The decision comes in the light of the emerging trend of ‘nude dresses’ and sheer gowns making eye grabbing headlines, but also posing hurdles in the movement of guests as suggested by the official statement of the festival.

In 2022, a guest appeared toppless at the red carpet, and the infamous transparent dress of Bianca Censori at the Grammy awards this year might have been the final nail in the coffin for the festival authorities to revise the dress code.

The newly revised rules read, “This year, the Cannes Film Festival has made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect. The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law”

Additionally, the festival outlines that it “reserves the right to deny access to individuals whose attire could obstruct the movement of other guests or complicate seating arrangements in the screening rooms.”

No “Voluminous” Gowns

Voluminous outfits like such with longer trails can hinder the experience of other patrons and pose safety concerns as per the festival officials.

The statement further read, “The objective is not to control fashion in general, but to avoid total nudity and extremely bulbous clothing at red carpet events”

The new dress code aims to ensure swift movement of guests and reduced complications in seating arrangements.

With the new dress code in implications, the parade of stars, artists, and patrons will surely look different.
