Her majestic return to the silver screen has heightened expectations and also brought a flair of nostalgia for the time when she was entertaining her audience with some of her best performances. Koirala’s career is defined by some names that are almost synonymous with her identity in the tinsel town. This is a walk down the trail where Koirala did her career-defining movies of all time.

Saudagar

Her debut movie in Bollywood came in 1991 starring alongside debutant Vivek Mushran. Commercially a great success, Saudagar was the third highest-grossing movie of the year catapulting her name and recognition in the industry. Subsequently, she was flooded with multiple opportunities, even though not all of them were definitive. In a span of only three years, she has done 7 movies until a movie that is a significant identifier of Koirala- ‘1942-A Love Story.’

1942: A Love Story

In 1994, Koirala was tested for the main lead of the movie after Madhuri Dixit could not do it because of her busy schedule. In her first test, Manisha failed miserably and pleaded for a second chance from the director where she was finally signed as the female lead. Ironically, the movie audition where she was called a “terrible actor” became the movie to win her a nomination at Filmfare Award for Best Actress. The movie was also a fresh take on a love story where the villain was the typical family but India’s freedom struggle.

Bombay

Burkha-clad Manisha Koirala essayed the role of Shaila Banu, a Muslim girl in love with a Hindu boy in Mani Ratnam’s ‘Bombay’ is a momentous role in the celluloid of Indian cinema. In the backdrop of the 1992 Bombay riots, the love story of Shaila and Shekhar sparkles in the film.

Dil Se…

Dil Se… featured a talented cast of Shahrukh Khan, Manisha Koirala, and Preity Zinta. An intense political film by Mani Ratnam attempting to portray the seven shades of love, could not do well at the Indian box office. The movie, however, became the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts. It did a commendable business overseas, won two national, awards and a Netpac Award at the Berlin International Film Festival along with six Fimfares

Only a few mentions of her greatest work have been highlighted here. With ‘Heeramandi’ the hopes and expectations both are high if the series would also go down in the history of her filmography as not just her comeback after hiatus but also a career-defining moment.
