Dalai Lama Biography

The present Dalai Lama, who has served as Tibet's highest spiritual authority and ruler since 1940, is known to the Tibetan people as Gyalwa Rinpoche. He is regarded as a living Bodhisattva, specifically an incarnation of Chenrezig in Tibetan and Avalokitevara in Sanskrit. On July 6, 1935, Lhamo Thondup was born into a farming and horse-trading family in the little hamlet of Taktser, or Chija Tagtser, in the Qinghai Province, which is on the outskirts of the traditional Tibetan province of Amdo.
