Monkey Man:  Dev Patel has taken the world by storm after his directorial debut, and pioneering venture into the genre of action, with Monkey Man. The labour of 10 years has been evident in the blood-spattering action revenge thriller.

Starting from scratch with ‘Skins’ in 2006, to getting a BAFTA nomination for his breakthrough debut ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ subsequently doing projects including ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ ‘The Newsroom’, ‘Lion’ and ‘The Green Knight’, Patel’s filmography ranges from comedy, political drama to fantasy adventure.

With ‘Monkey Man’, he has immersed himself into the process of script writing, and stunt hero further expanding the realm of his reach and leaving fans awe-struck by his potential.

Monkey Man had to wait 10 Years

In an interview with ‘Entertainment Weekly’ Patel unveiled his inaccessibility to a role like the anonymous ‘Kid’ in The Monkey Man. With his directorial debut, Patel envisioned redefining himself as an actor capable of creating and portraying a bone-wrenching character throwing punches, and combatting kicks with his martial arts prowess.

Patel as a kid was inclined towards action movies and fighting skills. Legends like Bruce Lee were his obsession. His fascination extended to Hindu mythology thanks to the elder members of his family.

Cut to some decades later, Monkey Man has been the brainchild of a kid who loved action sequences, martial arts, and classic Indian mythology.

The dominating image of lord Hanuman in the movie has been a superhero for him in the likes of the iconic ‘Superman’ for Patel.

The redefined actor, writer, and director

In his words, “to break the mold, you have to enter it. For me, it was like, ‘Okay, I’ll show them what we can do.” The thirst to embark on something undeterred as an actor and artist has kept him on his feet fueling his zeal to write, produce, and direct ‘Monkey Man’.

With his debut movie, though he gathered world fame and recognition, what also got attached to him was stereotypes and caricature. Until ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ and ‘The Newsroom’ happened where he truly got to play per his caliber. Saroo Brierley’s biographical film, ‘Lion’, real-life incident-based ‘Hotel Mumbai’, and fantasy adventure ‘The Green Knight’ has been some of the most promising performances of the actor.

While the action directorial of Patel, ‘Monkey Man’ has been released worldwide, Indian fans still await the movie as its release in India is still uncertain.
