Digital Passport: Recognising the need for digital transformation in official operations, the Central Foreign Ministry recently launched the Passport Seva Programme (PSP 2.0) as part of the e-Passport program. This enhanced passport has a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip placed in the front cover, denoted by a golden emblem. The chip securely holds sensitive information such as the passport holder’s name, date of birth, passport number, photograph, and biometric data such as fingerprints. It also allows officials to scan the chip without opening the passport, resulting in faster border processing and increased travel efficiency.
To apply for an e-Passport, go to the official Passport Seva website, register a new user account or log in, fill out the application form, schedule an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), and pay the required cost. Applicants must visit the centre on the day of their appointment to provide biometric data and verify their documents. A valid address proof (such as a utility bill or voter ID), a birth certificate, academic mark sheets and certificates, and an Aadhaar or voter ID are required for identification. Renewals require both the original passport and photocopies. The e-Passport’s encrypted chip protects data and prevents fraud.
