Born in a family of farmers, Harmanpreet belongs to Jandiala Guru township, a village in Amritsar, Punjab, Born on 6 January 1996 his childhood was spent in the lush fields of Punjab assisting his parents. Little did he know his labor at the field one day will be his biggest source of strength while laying for his country. His skills with the rusty gear stick of the tractor gained him the arm strength required for drag flicks, his biggest power. His closeness to his land soon laid the foundation for his promising career.

His relationship with the hockey stick started in 211 when he joined the Surjeet Academy in Jalander to hone his hockey skills under the coachship of senior penalty corner specialists Gaganpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh.
His prowess on the field escalated him to Sultan Johor Cup in 2011 debuting as junior National. In 2014, he won the Player of the Tournament award at the Sultan Johor Cup with nine goals at the youth tournament in Malaysia to help India win the top prize. He won the Junior Men's Asia Cup in 2015 with 14 goals to his credit.
With an impressive spell of continuous outstanding performance, Harmanpreet made his way to his senior debut on 3 May, 2015 during a Test series against Japan.
Rio 2016
During 2015 and 2016 he faced a major setback in his performance at the Rio 2016 Olympics with a spell of disappointing period leading to his expulsion from the Asian Championship Trophy.
But it only took his win at the 2016 Junior World Cup with India to reinstate himself as a promising talent for the Indian hockey team. He established himself as a trusted penalty corner specialist the team could rely on.
He played a crucial role in helping India to win a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with the highest goals in the competition at nine goals. He also bagged FIH Player of the Year 2022.

Tokyo 2020
Essaying a crucial role at the Tokyo Olympics the top scorer for India, he was pivotal in India's historic win of the Bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In January 2023, Harmanpreet was bestowed with the captaincy for the Indian Men’s Hockey Team for the Hockey World Cup. From a disappointing start at captaincy, he soon grew his footing as the gold medal-winning captain at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou. He also led the team to win the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 title and escalated India’s position at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
