How Indian Civilians Should Prepare For War Amidst Escalating Tension With Pakistan

India-Pakistan Tension:  In the aftermath of the Operation Sindoor, tensions have escalated quickly and intensely at the India-Pakistan border areas. India strategically targeted 9 terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in a retaliatory attack as a response to the Pahalgam violence that claimed 26 lives.

In the wake of the air strikes between the two countries, following the mock drills that took place across 244 civil defence districts on Wednesday, the ordinary citizens of India need to be prepared in times of war. From blackouts to making temporary shelters, essential war preparations can save lives.

Mock Drills Across India

A nationwide security exercise took place on Wednesday in 244 areas to prepare the civilians for any hostile attacks from the enemy. A mock drill of this kind was last held in 1971 during the Indo-Pak war, whose result was the creation of Bangladesh.

Preparation for war by soldiers and civilians is the best defensive strategy during hostile activities, when enemies are capable of striking with air bombs and more.

Civilians' Preparation For War

The civilians of India follow the Center’s civil defence guidelines in war preparedness. Let us tell you some significant measures listed in the guidelines to make you war-ready, if the worst happens.

Safe Water Management: Bombing can result in bursting pipelines and potential disruption to the safe water supply. Water is an essential component for survival and is the first to be impacted in times of crisis.

Food Inspection: The civil defence guidelines state, “Adequate food inspection during an emergency, especially the inspection of emergency kitchens and canteens. Prevention of epidemics by mass inoculation.”

Restriction on the use of light: Amidst a threat as severe as war, blackouts are common in volatile areas where any source of beaming lights can become the target of the enemy’s aircraft. The civil guidelines document advises, "All lights capable of throwing a beam, carried on a motor vehicle, shall be screened." It can be done in multiple ways, like by passing down brown paper over the glass, one thickness on the lower half and two thickness on the upper half. Moreover, paint, cardboard, and curtains can be used at homes to avoid getting recognised by the enemies.

Vigilance: Staying vigilant about one’s surroundings can come in help at times of crisis. Learning about the nearest exits, digging in trenches, finding shelters in bunkers, and finding secure and sheltered places can save lives.
