India-Pakistan War Update: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that both India and Pakistan have agreed to full and immediate ceasefire effective from Saturday 5 pm. Misri stated that Pakistan’s Diretctor General of Military Operations (DGMO) initiated the talk to put a stop to all kind of military actions, on the land, sea and in the air. The announcement was further posted shared by US President Donald Trump on his social media. The decision was worked out directly between the two countries, as per sources. India has worked this out bilaterally and not as a result of mediation, the sources said.
The ceasefire was announced after multiple attacks happening from both Indian and Pakistani military forces, which were expected to escalate into a war-like situation. In the past few days, the rising tensions between the neighbouring countries have led to many uncertainties, significantly affecting the civilians and the government alike.
Here’s a brief timeline of what happened in the past few days between India and Pakistan.
It all started after a major terrorist attack on tourists by five armed militants near Pahalgam in the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, claiming the lives of 26 civilians.
Between 24 April and 6 May, Pakistan and India engaged in skirmishes including cross-border firing and intermittent artillery shelling.
On the night of 23 April 2025, the Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri held a special press briefing after a meeting with the CCS. He announced India’s decision to temporarily suspend the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan with immediate effect until Pakistan ceases its support for cross-border terrorism. He further announced the closure of the integrated check post at Attari–Wagah Border, a travel ban for all Pakistani nationals to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, and cancellation of all previously issued visas.
On 24 April, Pakistan suspended visas issued to Indian nationals and closed its airspace to Indian aircraft, expelled Indian diplomats and instructed Indian military advisers to depart the country no later than the 30 April. Pakistan also cut off all trade with India and suspended the Simla Agreement, on 24 April 2025 in retaliation. The Attari–Wagah border ceremony was also reduced and the symbolic handshake did not take place.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs announced the implementation of mock drills across 244 districts nationally on Wednesday, May 7, to enhance civil defence preparedness.
On 7 May 2025, India launched missile strikes on Pakistan, codenamed “Operation Sindoor.” The Indian Armed Forces conducted missile strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (Pok), in retaliation for the terror attack in Pahalgam. The targeted terror sites include Bahawalpur (Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) stronghold) and Muridke (Lashkar-e-Taiba’s (LeT) base), killing around 100 terrorists, according to India.
Following the operation, the Pakistan Army reportedly conducted heavy mortar and artillery shelling on Poonch, targeting civilian areas and infrastructure. At least 15 civilians were killed and 43 were injured.
On the night of 8 May, Pakistani authorities said that several Indian drones intruded into Pakistani airspace, and 12 Indian drones were shot down. As per Pakistan, these drones were sent into nine different locations, including the cities of Karachi and Lahore, and one of the drones struck a Pakistani military facility near Lahore.
On the other hand, Indian authorities claimed that Pakistan launched drone and missile strikes across several Indian cities, including Amritsar and that India negated these strikes with the S-400 missile system. In response, India carried out SEAD/DEAD operations and claimed to have neutralised the air defence systems in Lahore.
Indian media reports claimed that Pakistan launched an airstrike directed in and around Jammu district including the airport and the Jammu University at in the evening. All of the eight adversary missiles were claimed to have been intercepted by the S-400 missile system. Reportedly, multiple explosions were heard in Jammu along with an explosion in Jaisalmer, where drones and fighter jets were also reported.
On Saturday, a ceasefire was announced effective from Saturday 5.00 PM.
