The trailer starts with the young Indira walking into the Prime Minister’s office for the first time after earning the throne post her father. Giving a revolting glimpse into the trail of “bad news” that occurred under the realm of Indira from the ‘Shimla Agreement’ to the ‘Total Revolution’ and the arrival of Sanjay Gandhi in the scene. The trailer has raised the curiosity and hopes of actors and fans alike who are looking forward to the release of Emergency in theaters on 6 September.

Kanaga Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ however is not the first cinematic attempt to chronicle the events that unfolded the 1975 Emergency, its aftermath and the many horrors it brought on the citizens. Here is a curated list of Hindi films and short films based on the events of 1975 Emergency.

Transistor

An Amazon miniTV original short film starring Ahsaas Channa and Mohammad Samad as Uma and Pawan, two innocent and simple lovers. Hardly ever spoken to one another, the two fall in love with each other through a common transistor they listen to. With its symbolic meaning, the transistor is what makes and breaks their relationship. Transistor was rewarded as a token of encouragement for men who willingly sterilized themselves during the emergency.

Indu Sarkar

Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, ‘Indu Sarkar’- a pun on the Indira Gandhi led government follows an orphan woman named Indu in the pre and post-emergency era. To lead a settled life she trades her dream of becoming a poetess with becoming a wife to a misguided man who is working under the PM led government. Imposition of Emergency brings a massive shift in her life when she chooses to leave her husband to shelter two children who lost their parents to Emergency. The movie uses the metaphor of Indu’s micro cosmos to represent the impact of the Emergency on society and its people.

Nasbandi

The forced sterilization of men is one of the most infamous atrocities inflicted during the Emergency of 1975. A satirical Bollywood film ‘Nasbandi’ translated to sterilization is written, directed, and produced by I.S. Johar who uses the duplicates of all popular actors to make a satirical case for the tumultuous time of the Emergency and forced vasectomy of nearly 1.8 million men with the use of humor. The movie majorly highlights how the sterilization program targeted the lower classes in the name of popular control measures.

Aandhi

Directed by Giulzar in 1975, the movie did not explicitly mention the leaders and their action but featured characters based on the then PM Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, and JP Narayan. Aarti Devi (based on Indira Gandhi) succeeds her father’s political legacy hinting at the Idira regime.

Cinema has long been acting as a mirror and commentator of the functions of the society. The filmmakers have attempted to pour the events of emergency on celluloid with these films.
