Smriti Irani Career: Tulsi Virani, the one character that will always be remembered by audiences, from children to their grandparents, is finally coming back on screens after Smriti Irani confirmed the second season of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Sharing a heartfelt post on her social media, along with Ekta Kapoor and Starplus, the actress-turned-politician shared the promo of the show, filling fans with excitement and nostalgia. 

With Smriti Irani reprising her role as “Tulsi” in KSBKBT 2, it is expected that some characters will make a comeback with the same cast, and the makers are also expected to cast the younger generation for a fresh take on the show. 

Smriti Irani is making her TV comeback with KSBKBT 2, and her remarkable journey speaks a lot about her struggles and success. Let us dive into her initial career days, her modelling career, and her journey from Tulsi to Cabinet Minister. 

Smriti Irani Initial Career

Smriti Irani’s career has spanned several disciplines, including her participation in Miss India, modelling, and her television career, before becoming a renowned political leader. The actress moved to Mumbai at a young age to pursue her aspirations and competed in the Miss India contest in 1998, finishing in the top ten. After a few modelling campaigns, Irani moved on to the television industry, where she rose to prominence for her role as “Tulsi” in the iconic daily soap opera Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, a character who became well-known in Indian households and even in other countries. 

Smriti Irani Acting Career

Irani and Mika Singh collaborated on the song “Boliyan” from the album ‘Saawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag’ in 1998. She made her acting debut in 2000 with the TV shows ‘Aatish’ and ‘Hum Hain Kal Aaj Aur Kal’, which aired on Star Plus. She also starred in ‘Kavita’ on DD Metro. Irani landed the lead role of “Tulsi Virani” in Ekta Kapoor’s Star Plus production ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ in 2000, and she has won five ITA Awards back to back for Best Actress Popular, as well as four Indian Telly Awards.

However, Irani had a disagreement with producer Ekta Kapoor and left the show in June 2007, being replaced by Gautami Kapoor. She returned in May 2008 for a special episode, reuniting with Kapoor. KSBKBT ended in November 2008, marking the decline of Irani’s television career.  

In 2002, she co-starred alongside Nitish Bharadwaj in Zee TV’s ‘Ramayan’, playing the role of “Sita.” Irani co-produced the show ‘Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan’ in 2006 through her company Ugraya Entertainment, along with Balaji Telefilms. She also played “Uma,” the lead character in the show. In 2007, she produced the Sony TV series ‘Virrudh’ and played the lead role, “Vasudha.” She produced ‘Mere Apne’ for 9X and co-starred with Vinod Khanna as the protagonist. She played a supporting role in Zee TV’s ‘Teen Bahuraaniyaan’.

Irani and Sakshi Tanwar hosted the dance-based reality show ‘Yeh Hai Jalwa’ on 9X in 2008. In the same year, she produced another Zee TV show, ‘Waaris’, which aired till 2009. She appeared in the 2009 comedy show ‘Maniben.com’, which aired on SAB TV. She co-produced the show with Contiloe Entertainment. In 2012, she appeared in the Bengali film ‘Amrita’.

After almost a decade, Smriti is all set to make her television comeback with Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2. 

Smriti Irani’s Political Career

Irani joined the BJP in 2003. In 2004, she was appointed as vice-president of the Maharashtra Youth Wing. Irani was named an executive member of the BJP’s central committee.  Irani was appointed National Secretary of the BJP in early 2010, and on June 24, she was appointed All India President of the BJP’s women’s wing, BJP Mahila Morcha, where she successfully pursued Permanent Commission for Women in the Indian Army by facilitating legal aid to women officers who held temporary commissions and were agitating for permanent commissions.

In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi named Irani as Minister of Human Resource Development in his cabinet. Many individuals opposed her appointment because she did not have a formal university education. Irani implemented several university changes during her tenure as HRD minister.

Irani was transferred from MHRD to the Ministry of Textiles as part of a cabinet reshuffle in July 2016. When previous Minister Venkaiah Naidu resigned from the ministry to run for vice president in July 2017, she was given additional responsibility for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (India). Her most major achievement came in 2019, when she was elected to Parliament. Smriti defeated Rahul Gandhi by a margin of 55,000 votes. She is one of the cabinet’s youngest members.
