Maalik Movie Review: Rajkummar Rao’s highly anticipated movie Maalik has finally been released in cinemas. Since its announcement, the film has generated a lot of hype and has been regarded as one of Rajkummar Rao’s most promising roles yet. Set against the violent backdrop of 1980s Allahabad, Maalik delves into a society fuelled by violence, ambition, and power. Right from the start, the film keeps you on edge, making you wonder what will happen next.
The film begins on a dramatic note, immediately engaging viewers in Maalik’s dark and frightening setting. Rajkummar Rao plays Maalik, a tenacious gangster determined to rise to political power to win a permanent seat in the Vidhan Sabha. His hunger for vengeance and power drives him to extreme lengths. He pursues his goal with ruthlessness, eliminating everybody who stands in his way. However, his journey is not simple, as he encounters a challenging rival in the form of a seasoned leader, played by Saurabh Shukla. With so many questions in mind, the movie keeps the narrative gripping throughout.
Rajkummar Rao is definitely the film’s soul. Rao, known for his diverse roles, impresses audiences with a never-before-seen, dramatic, and intimidating avatar who leaves an unforgettable impact. Manushi Chhillar plays his wife, Shalini, and gives a balanced performance that portrays both fear and an understanding of her husband’s complex personality. Prosenjit Chatterjee delivers mystery and depth with his character, while Saurabh Shukla stands up as a powerful opponent, delivering an exceptional performance.
Maalik is a powerful product with a strong screenplay, direction, and technical work, all combine to produce an engaging cinematic experience. The writing is sharp, the dialogues are impactful, and the pacing remains constant, keeping the audience engaged throughout. The background music intensifies the tension, giving an extra edge to the film. Among the songs, Huma Qureshi's energetic dance performance gives a happy and graceful shift from the story’s gloomy tone.
With a solid 3.5 stars, Maalik is a well-crafted criminal drama with superb acting, a captivating storyline, and excellent technical execution. If you’re looking for an action-packed, emotional rollercoaster this weekend, Maalik is worth watching.
