Met Gala 2025: Finally, the time of the year has arrived when everyone sticks to their screens to watch the spectacular Met Gala event, held every first Monday of May in the lavish New York City. The event witnesses one of the most breathtaking, surreal, and artistically inclined costumes that cost millions, exuding luxury and grandeur.

This year, the theme highlights the charisma of Black Fashion, with its theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Viewers can expect both male and female celebrities embracing the power of Black Fashion in their style, from embellished gowns and velvet luxe to crisp tuxedos and flaunting lapels. 

The theme is inspired by Monica L Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. This year’s Met Gala dress code is “Tailored for You,” referring to the exhibition’s suiting and menswear. This is the first Met Gala in almost two decades to focus solely on menswear.

The Met Gala is considered one of the biggest fashion events in the world, with its own secrets and scandals. Check out these lesser-known facts about the event that might surprise you. 

• The Met Gala was formerly called the Costume Institute Benefit, and is a fundraising festival held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan.

• Initially, the Met Gala didn’t have themes. It was not until the 1970s, when Diana Vreeland joined the Met Gala committee after leaving her post at Vogue decided to make the event more elaborative. Her debut exhibition was “The World of Balenciaga” in 1973, and she worked at The Met until her death in 1989, producing 14 standout shows and reviving the Costume Institute with donations and record attendance.

• The Met Gala takes place on the first Monday of May each year, coinciding with the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion display on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

• Following Vreeland’s death, the Met Gala continued to rise in grandeur, with exhibitions of Gianni Versace, Christian Dior, and Vreeland herself. Princess Diana attended the 1996 gala, wearing a Dior slip dress designed by John Galliano.

• The Met Gala is an exclusive event attended by invited guests and celebrities. Under the chairperson Anna Wintour, it was decided to ban selfies and use of social media inside the gala event. 

• The Met Gala has a documentary named “The First Monday in May” which was opened the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016. 

• Over the years, the Met Gala has extended its guest list, from renowned celebrities to inviting YouTubers, beauty influencers and social media influencers.

• The Met Gala is not for the common audience to attend; it is an exclusive gala where around 450 guests are invited. 

• Ticket costs have increased substantially since Diana Vreeland’s $100 dessert tickets. According to multiple media outlets, a single ticket to the 2024 gala costs $75,000, with tables starting at $350,000. The proceeds from ticket sales benefit the costume institute.

• The Met Gala meal is followed by a performance. Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Lenny Kravitz, Ariana Grande, and Cynthia Erivo are among the top performers at the Met Gala.

• Technically, you must be 18 years or older to attend the Met Gala, with organizers confirming the age limit ahead of the 2018 Met Gala when Maddie Ziegler stated she would be unable to attend because she was only 15.

• After walking the red carpet with the iconic stairs, the guests join Wintour and the other hosts in a reception line. Following that, they are invited to tour The Costume Institute’s display before it opens to the public. Then they eat, socialize, and network, and the night concludes with music, dancing, and performances.

• Celebrities rarely get to keep their gowns. The gowns are returned to the design house to be archived.

• Wintour was claimed to have previously banned substances that could get stuck in your teeth, give bad breath, or, worst of all, stain their gown.  So, appetizers are designed to be easily consumed.
