Mother’s Day 2025: Mothers are the wonders of nature known to create, nurture, and feed a child all on their own. Their strength and skills make them a force unmatchable. The presence of a partner does not limit or expand the capacity of a mother to carry a child from a young age to adulthood. 

Single mothers have amazingly raised children by setting new definitions of motherhood in a world that associates it only with the womb. A number of Bollywood mothers have broken the glass ceiling that expects them to marry a man to be a mother by challenging the judiciary and society to embrace their right to motherhood. 

Actresses like Sushmita Sen and producer Ekta Kapoor have earned distinguishable names in their respective fields with their talent and hard work, and have chosen motherhood with or without a partner. These trailblazers are redefining what being a mother means in India by also setting a stepping stone for all the women looking up to them.

At the age of 24, Sushmita Sen decided to put her career and society’s expectations of her getting married to a man on the back burner and prioritised her motherly instinct to raise her children. She adopted her first daughter, Renne, in 2000 as an unmarried and fertile woman, which was unconventional for the time. In 2010, she adopted Alisah, her second daughter. Her motherhood journey stands as an inspiration to many young single women who want to be a mother and maybe not a wife.

Sreeleela, a popular Telugu film actress, made headlines by adopting two differently-abled kids named Guru and Shobhitha at the age of 21 years only. She adopted her two kids as a single and unmarried woman in 2022, setting an example for young girls not to wait for a partner to take up their instincts as a mother. She met the two kids while shooting the ‘By Two Love’ film.

Tandon later found love in Anil Thadani and tied the knot with him. The couple also has two biological children named Rasha and Ranbirvardhan.

So she decided to take the help of modern technology via surrogacy to have her firstborn, a baby boy named Ravie, in 2019. The producer broke many traditional norms of traditional motherhood, and also gave voice to many mothers who chose surrogacy to be a mother.
