Nag Panchami 2025: Nag Panchami, a major Hindu festival, is dedicated to the worship of Nagas, or snake deities. This auspicious day, celebrated with great devotion in India and Nepal, falls on the fifth day (Panchami Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha of the lunar month of Sawan. In 2025, Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 29.

Nag Panchami Significance

Snakes have a special place in Hindu mythology. They are frequently portrayed as powerful, magical entities affiliated with several gods and cosmic powers. Lord Shiva wears them as garlands; Lord Vishnu sleeps on the thousand-headed Shesha Naga; and Vasuki, the serpent king, played a role in the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean).

Nag Panchami represents a deep respect for nature and its sensitive balance. It is a day when devotees recognise the importance of snakes in the ecology and pray for their protection, prosperity, and well-being. The celebration also serves as a reminder to be in harmony with all living things.

Nag Panchami Rituals

  • Devotees get up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes. They make a puja thali with offerings including milk, flowers, turmeric, sandalwood paste, and unbroken rice (akshat). Nag Devta (serpent gods) are worshipped through the use of idols or images made of silver, stone, or wood.  Many people also draw snakes with rice flour or turmeric paste at the entrances to their homes.

  • Offering milk to snake idols or in anthills where snakes are thought to live, is a popular and important tradition. This act signifies food, respect, and a request for protection against snakebites. Milk is usually provided to idols or at designated areas.

  • Many devotees fast on Nag Panchami for their families’ well-being and to seek blessings for protection against snake-related problems and negativity.

  • On this day, certain activities that could disturb or endanger snakes, such as digging the ground, ploughing fields, or cutting trees, are avoided.

  • In some cultures, particularly for women, Nag Panchami is also known as “Bhratru Panchami,” where sisters pray for their brothers’ longevity and protection from snake bites and other hazards.
