National Students Day 2025: National Students Day is observed on July 9 in India, and it is dedicated to commemorating the critical role that students play in creating the country’s future. While less well-known than some other observances, this day is historically significant, notably for one of India’s largest student organisations, and serves as a reminder of the government’s commitment to supporting student goals through various scholarship programs.
National Students Day, celebrated on July 9th, honours the founding of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a notable student organisation in India. The RSS activist Balraj Madhok founded the ABVP on July 9, 1949, and it was formally registered on this date. It was founded to encourage constructive student activity and counter diverse ideological influences on Indian university campuses after independence. Over the years, the ABVP has evolved to become one of the world’s largest student organisations, with millions of members, and has been active in a variety of educational, social, and national reconstruction initiatives.
National Students Day celebrates the ABVP’s legacy and contributions to the student landscape in India. It is a day for the organisation and its supporters to reflect on their journey and renew their commitment to student well-being and national development.
Recognising the value of accessible education, the Indian government provides numerous scholarships to meritorious and underprivileged students at all levels of education. These scholarships are intended to alleviate the financial burden on students and their families, ensuring that no deserving student is left behind due to economic restraints.
The Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan (PM-USP) Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students gives financial support to deserving students from low-income households to cover some of their day-to-day expenditures while pursuing higher education. Scholarships are provided depending on the results of the Higher Secondary/Class 12 Board Examination. Students who are already receiving benefits from other scholarship schemes, such as state-run scholarship schemes, fee waivers, or reimbursement programs, are not eligible.
PMSSS is a scholarship scheme administered by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for students residing in the UTs of J&K and Ladakh who, after passing the Class 12th or equivalent examination, secure admission to government colleges/institutions and other select institutions outside the UTs of J&K and Ladakh through AICTE’s counselling process under the government’s supernumerary quota (except for medical courses). The applicant must have completed the Class 12th examination at a JKBOSE or CBSE-affiliated school in the J&K and Ladakh union territories. The applicant’s family income should not exceed Rs 8,00,000 annually.
The Ministry of Defence established the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme to promote higher technical and professional education for the dependent children of ex-servicemen and ex-coast guard members, as well as their widows. The applicant must have obtained a minimum educational qualification (MEQ) of 60% or higher, such as 10+2/Diploma/Graduation.
The scheme’s goal is to grant scholarships to deserving students from economically disadvantaged parts of the minority population in order to improve their chances of pursuing higher education. From a registered institution in India, whether a government or private school, including residential government institutes and approved private institutes. The applicant’s parents/guardians’ annual income from all sources should be less than or equivalent to Rs 2,00,000.
This scheme assists students with disabilities pursuing a post-matric qualification from UGC/AICTE recognised universities, i.e., students in Class 11th, Class 12th, including Polytechnics, Post-Matriculation Diploma/Certificates, Bachelor’s Degree/Diploma in India, and Master's Degree/Diploma. This initiative intends to assist SwDs in furthering their education in order to prepare them to earn a living and find a decent place in society, despite the fact that they encounter several physical, financial, psychological, and mental barriers to pursuing studies and living with dignity. The applicant’s parents or guardians’ total annual income (from all sources) cannot exceed Rs 2.50 lakh per year.
Aims to promote and support specially abled children to pursue technical education. This is an endeavour to provide every young student who is otherwise uniquely abled with the option to continue their studies and prepare for a successful future through technical education/knowledge. During the current fiscal year, a family’s total annual income should not exceed Rs. 8 lakh.
A maximum of two girl children per family are eligible for the rewards. The advantages are available for a maximum of four years for first-year admitted students and three years for second-year admitted students via lateral entrance.
