Pinch of salt in water for hydration; Is the Instagram viral hack even necessary for all?

Viral Instagram Hacks:  Instagram influencers are recommending new hydration hacks lately. Adding a pinch of salt to your water is a blooming viral instagram hack vouched by rookies and experts alike on the internet to boost hydration. But is it really a necessity to hydrate yourself? Let’s find out.

Why add salt to water?

The popular viral trend promises that adding a pinch of salt/pink salt/Celtic sea salt to your daily water intake will help improve the cell's water absorption process. Sodium is a major electrolyte essential in allowing the cell to absorb water through osmosis.

Sodium and chloride are essential in hydration as they deliver the water to the cell, and therefore its lack can result in dehydration. Loss of electrolytes is common in athletes, people who workout extensively for an hour or more or people who work in sweat-inducing heat.

Hence adding salt to water could be beneficial for those who need those extra electrolytes replenished after loss.

Who needs extra electrolytes?

Excessive loss of salt in the body occurs mainly due to intensive sweating. Intensive sweating however is not something experienced by all on an everyday basis. People who spend a lot of time in a heat atmosphere or work out for one hour or more tend to sweat a lot, losing essential electrolytes from their body. Hence, sports drinks have a certain concentration of electrolytes to help replenish the loss.

During a sweltering summer like that in India, individuals working in extreme heat outside may lose the same electrolytes leading to the need for replenishment.

Should you add salt to your water?

Yes, if you fall into the aforementioned category of people who sweat more than the average person, you should consider adding salt to your water.

Many of us however satiate our need for electrolytes or salts in our body through the meals we take through the day because we only need 2,300 milligrams of it in a day.

Excessive amounts of salt intake can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, heart failure or stroke.

Benefits of Hydration

The numerous advantages of drinking water are no longer a piece of privy information. From glowing skin to improving digestion, water is indeed the magical drink to keep one healthy, radiating, and fit.

  • Drinking ample amounts of water throughout the day keeps your body temperature at normal levels.
  • It lubricates the joints to keep them moving.
  • Water helps in getting rid of wastes from the body via perspiration, and urination.

While water is essential in overall well-being, not every hack is an essential one for all. They can work magically for some as they fill in the prerequisites, but one size rarely suits all hence it is essential to be aware of your needs, and strive to fulfill them.
