Satyajit Ray Birth Anniversary: One of the greatest filmmakers of India, Satyajit Ray, who planted Indian cinema on the world map, and is today counted among the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, and Martin Scorsese, was a man with many talents. He was a filmmaker, screenwriter, music composer, and graphic artist whose work explores complex themes with insightful storytelling. 

Ray was born on 2 May 1921 in Kolkata, India, to Suprabha Ray and Sukuma Ray, who was an author and illustrator. His grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray, was a distinguished writer, painter, violin player, and composer. So from a young age, Ray was exposed to the arts and their forms through which artist expresses human experiences. 

Ray is popularly known as a humanist filmmaker, putting humanism on top of any other ideologies or narratives. His films continue to inspire filmmakers, actors, and artists across the genres. Recipient of several national and international accolades to his name, Ray’s work was courageous and unapologetic, and therefore sometimes controversial. 

On the occasion of his 104th birth anniversary, we tell you about some of his most popular and influential films that are also streaming on digital platforms for you to stream this weekend. 

Pather Panchali (1955)

The directorial debut of Satyajit Ray, produced by the West Bengal Government, Pather Panchali won 11 international prizes, including the “Best Human Documentary” at the Cannes. The film brought the world’s attention to the Indian and South Asian film industry. 

The film follows the trials and tribulations faced by a young boy named Apu and his sister Durga in the harsh village life as a poor family. 

Aparajito (1956)

The second installment in the Appy trilogy, the film follows Apu moving away from his home in Calcutta to Varanasi in dreams of a better education as he steps into adolescence. The feel stirs a resonating chord with the viewers for bringing the human experience of adolescence’s dreams, aspirations, and challenges. 

Jalsaghar (1958)

A film to transport you back in time when the fragile feudal lords were turning obsolete, but trying hard to hold onto their past glory. The film is a subliminal experience for lovers of music with its phenomenal music and Kathak dance sequences. 

Apur Sansar (1959)

The final film in the Apu trilogy, it won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. The film now follows Apu as a young man in the twentieth-century Indian subcontinent, married to Aparna, played by Sharmila Tagore.

Charulata (1964)

Among the controversial films of Ray, Charulata is about a bored housewife whose life gets a pang of desire and fantasy. The forbidden love between Charulata and Amal shakes her marriage with Bhupati.
