Swapnil Kusale Makes History: Swapnil Kusale is the first ever Indian shooter to win an Olympic Medal in the 50m Rifle Positions Event. He made this historic stride by finishing with a score of 451.4 in the finals to win bronze for India, also marking the third Olympic medal for the country at the Paris Olympics 2024. 

From shooting the expensive bullets with vigilance during practice lest he wastes them to bagging a medal in his Olympic debut, Kusale’s journey has been bitter and sour with a tinge of cricket in it. Let’s find out. 

Swapnil Kusale’s Biography

Born on 6 August 1995, in Pune to a school teacher father and a village Sarpanch mother, Swapnil’s sports acumen is not something he inherited from a family, but honed meticulously with labor.  

 

In 2009, he took his founding steps into shooting with Maharashtra's Krida Prabhodini, the government's primary programme dedicated to Sports, where he realized his interests and strength in shooting. Almost as a present to his dedication and skills in shooting,  Lakshya Sports offered to sponsor his talent in 2013 which was a much needed helipad for him to escalate into National and International championship. 

Swapnil Kusale’s Achievements

Kusale boasts of several prominent awards to his name, among which are World Championships and Asian Shooting Championship. Take a look. 

  • 2024 Paris Olympic: Bronze in 50m Rifle 3 Positions 
  • 2023 World Cup, Baku: Gold in mixed team event; a silver in individual and team event respectively 
  • 2022 Asian Games: Gold in team event

  • 2021 World Cup, New Delhi: Gold in team event
  • 2017: Gold at the 61st National Championship in Thiruvananthapuram
  • 2015 Asian Shooting Championship, Kuwait: Gold in 50m rifle prone 3 event 
  • 2015: Won 59th National Shooting Championship in Tughlakabad

Connection To Cricket 

Swapnil, like the Thala of Indian cricket, worked as the ticket collector at the Indian railway. He looks up to MS Dhoni, and has watched his biopic film several times.
