The Indian fashion industry is one of the leading industries. Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar to Sandeep Khosla And Abu Jani the Indian designers are not only ruling the country but also sewing their creations internationally. But when we talk about ethinc or indian designs on ‘The go to Wedding Dress Designer’ of Celebrity, then Sabyasachi Mukherjee rules the charts. Sabyasachi lehenga and other ensembles are dreams for Indian brides. 

But have you ever thought about it? When did the dream world of Sabyasachi come to existence? Or how did Sabyasachi stitch the dream of becoming India’s top fashion designer? 

Sabyasachi Mukharejee’s Early struggle 

Born on 23 February 1974 in a middle class Bengali family, Sabyasachi was always interested in handicrafts and craftsmanship. He always got himself attracted to designs, fashion and more and his inspiration was ace designer Rohit Khosla.

Sabyasachi Parents didn’t supported his dream in fashion 

While he was always drawn to the world of fashion, his family background restricted him to take a step forward. At the age of 15 when Sabyasachi put forth his dream of becoming a fashion designer, his parents refused as they were going through a lot. His father lost his job and fashion designing was not considered to be a well paid profession. His parents also didn’t have enough financial sources to back up his further studies so fashion for Sabyasachi was a big NO. 

Sabyasachi ran Away from Home

Since Sabya’s parents were against his career of choice, he couldn’t find any other way and decided to leave his home. He left everything behind to follow his passion. But the road ahead was all filled with stones. He left home and came to Goa after his parents refused to pay the fees for the NIFT exam. However, he started working as a waiter in Goa and paid all the pees for the ace designing institute. 

Sabyasachi Graduate from NIFT

After all the hard work and passion, Sabyasachi graduated from National Institute of Fashion Technology and decided to start his own venture.

Foundation of Sabyasachi Design

After his graduation Sabyasachi decided to start his own label and borrowed 20,000 INR from his sister. With the small amount of Money, Sabyasachi started his own store with three employees. 

Even after graduation and starting his own label, he had to continue his hard work to make his life work. He used to work on his designs at night and the struggle continued for almost five years. 

Sabyasachi Indian Fashion Week

Sabya got his first big show as he debuted at the Indian Fashion Week in 2002. His designs got him enough appreciation and The Women’s Wear Daily proclaimed him as the future of Indian Fashion. 

Later Sabyasachi also made his first international runway debut in 2003 and got the  Grand Winner Award at the Mercedes Benz New Asia Fashion week in Singapore. And the sun of Sabyasachi started to rise. 

The Big Break

The year 2006 was a big year for Sabyasachi and his label. He showcased his collection the Nair Sisters at the prestigious Oxford University annual black tie charity dinner fashion show and became an international sensation. 

Later he continued his reign and showcased his designs at New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, Bridal Asia, Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, Miami Fashion Week and more. 

Let us tell you that Sabyasachi is also the only Indian designer who was invited to showcase his label at the Milan Fashion Week 2004. 

Sabyasachi entry in Bollywood

Sabyasachi’s designs debuted in bollywood with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Black for which he also won the National Award in 2005 for the Best Costume Designer for a feature film. 

Baabul, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Raavan, Guzaarish, Paa, No One Killed Jessica also witnessed the creation of Sabyasachi.

Sabyasachi and Bollywood Brides 

After ruling on Ramp and films, Sabyasachi also made his name as the dream label for the wedding contour. 

From Anushka Sharma to Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, all the leading ladies of Bollywood opted for Sabyasachi’s designs for their Wedding Day. 

Sabyasachi Designs pioneer of Indian Handloom

While Sabyasachi’s designs are all connected to Indian roots, his designs also mirror the Indian handloom and culture. Sabyasachi’s  attraction towards Indian handloom made him a pioneer to bring the best of Indian thread craft and designs. From Khadi to Silk and even cotton, Sabyasachi is creating magic in everything.
