US Vs Brazil: On July 9, US President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff against Brazil, a BRIC founding member. He condemned the current case against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, describing it as a witch hunt and a worldwide disgrace. In a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Trump stated that this law should not proceed. He also stated that Washington would launch a probe into Brazil’s trade policies.

Implementation Starts From August

In the letter, Trump stated that a 50 percent US tariff on Brazilian exports would go into effect on August 1, the same date as dozens of other economies. Trump began sending letters to trading partners this week as he increases pressure for more accords, but he has focused on those with which his country has significant deficits. Brazil had not previously been among the countries threatened by these high tariffs.
