ISRO New Chairman: Dr. V. Narayanan has been appointed as the next Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on January 7, 2025. He will take office on January 14, 2025, succeeding Chairman S. Somanath. Dr. Narayanan’s leadership is likely to play an important role as ISRO advances in space exploration, satellite technology, and human space flights.
Narayanan’s experience is seen as vital at this critical stage of India’s space program. He will manage the organization during the continuing development of numerous programs such as Gaganyaan, Chandrayaan-4, and the launch of India’s first space station. Narayanan will take over as Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of the Space Commission for a tenure of two years, beginning January 14, 2025.

Narayanan was born into a farming family in Melakattuvilai village, near Nagercoil, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, in 1964. He received his MTech degree in Cryogenic Engineering with First Rank from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 1989, followed by his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the same institution in 2001.
Narayanan began working for ISRO in 1984, first in the Solid Propulsion section for Sounding Rockets, Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicles (ASLV), and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV) at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). After finishing his M.Tech. in 1989, he joined the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC)'s Cryogenic Propulsion department.
As Project Director of the C25 Cryogenic Project, Narayanan led the design and development of the C25 Cryogenic Propulsion System for the GSLV Mk-III Launch Vehicle. Under his supervision, the system was created in a timely manner and successfully integrated into the GSLV Mk-III vehicle.
In 2018, he was appointed Director of LPSC, where he oversaw the development of liquid, semi-cryogenic, and cryogenic propulsion stages for launch vehicles, as well as chemical and electric propulsion systems for spacecraft. LPSC provided 183 liquid propulsion systems for 41 launch vehicles and 31 satellite missions over the course of his seven-year tenure.
Narayanan has won numerous honors, including the Silver Medal from IIT Kharagpur for First Place in M.Tech., the Gold Medal from the Astronautical Society of India (ASI), and the ASI Award for Rocket and Related Technologies. He is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Engineers (India), the Indian Cryogenic Council, and the Aeronautical Society of India.
