Operation Sindoor: Two decorated senior officers of the Indian Armed Force – Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh jointly led the media briefing on Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory attack to Pahalgam attack and cross border terrorism.   

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Indian defense forces carried out a retaliation attack in targeted areas of Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, as a direct answer to the deadly Pahalgam attack that claimed the lives of 26 innocent Indians.

Who is Col. Sophia Qureshi?

Hailing from Gujarat, a senior officer of the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, Colonel Sophia Qureshi is the first Indian woman officer to lead an Army contingent in a multinational military exercise held in 2016 – ‘Exercise Force 18’. It was the largest foreign military drill ever hosted in India. 

Col. Qureshi was the only female contingent commander in the exercise among the group of 18.

Military discipline and competence run in her blood, as she comes from a military family, and her grandfather served in the Indian army. 

A postgraduate in biochemistry, Col. Qureshi is married to a Mechanised Infantry officer. Her laurels are not limited to national platforms alone. On the global front, she has led her teams in several training segments, such as the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (PKOs), notably during the UN’s 2006 missions in Congo. 

Her achievements were never chance sake but a testament to her merit. She was picked from many notable peacekeeping trainers in the country for the role. 

Her presence at the military press briefing on the operation Sindoor was a symbolic and literal message to the women of this country that they are the ones making the future of the country with their strength and skills. Operation Sindoor is a metaphorical retaliation in resilience and grief by the women for their loss of husbands, fathers, or brothers.
