Women’s Health: Sciatica pain is common during pregnancy. The sciatic nerve originates from the lower back and goes into your legs which if stretched, injured, or pressured, causes pain. In pregnancy, as you put on more weight, there is some amount of pressure that comes onto this nerve which causes this pain.
Our body produces a hormone called relaxin, that relaxes the joints and ligaments of your body including your pelvis to accommodate the growing uterus, and for preparing the vaginal or the smooth birth of the baby. When these ligaments and joints relax, there is certain instability and stretch and pull which causes compression of the nerve and causes pain. As your pregnancy progresses, your uterus increases in size as the baby grows, gaining your wieght. As the weight increases, there is certain compression on the nerve again causing pain.
